U.S. syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia rates reach a record high. Cases of these sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) reached 2.3 million in 2017, increasing by more than 200,000 cases since 2016. A total of 1.7 million cases of chlamydia were diagnosed. Syphilis nearly doubled, especially in gay and bisexual men. Ceftriaxone remains the only effective antibiotic for gonorrhea, and azithromycin should be added to prevent ceftriaxone resistance. A lack of funding for prevention from public health agencies has fueled the increase in STDs. Among industrialized countries, the United States has the highest STD rates.
