Abstract

The nonclinical environment of a senior public-housing unit for low-income elders may seem an unlikely place for clinical community health nursing education. This was the perception of 13 senior undergraduate students who wondered how they could possibly have a clinical learning experience in a housing unit with no healthcare services. The author explains the structure, process, and outcome of the clinical practicum, and how students learned to respond to the residents and gain new understanding of themselves, as well as the residents, by applying a community-focused and service-learning approach to promoting the health of this elder population.
