Article Content

When I read "The Scoop on Green Tea" (Nontraditional Choices, April 2004), I was surprised that no mention was made of its vitamin K content, which I understand is quite high and precludes its being consumed by those on warfarin (Coumadin) therapy. Our dietitian reminds us of this frequently, and it's contained in all the anticoagulant literature we give our patients.

Editor's note: Like dark green leafy vegetables, green tea does contain vitamin K, which can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin. Patients taking warfarin needn't avoid these foods and beverages, but their international normalized ratio should be monitored and they should be instructed to consume a consistent amount of these substances from day to day to avoid problems.
