A new column, "At the Bedside," debuts this month. For long-term readers of JCN, this department might seem similar to a prior JCN department, "Nursing Grand Rounds," which focused on nursing case studies about various types of cardiovascular patients.

The purpose of this new column is to offer a forum for clinicians to share how they are implementing recent research findings in their practice. We want to highlight all areas of cardiovascular nursing practice, including prevention, acute care, chronic care, and home care as well as palliative and hospice care settings. Manuscripts may focus on quality improvement projects, implementation of professional guidelines into practice, case studies highlighting recent research findings, or a "best practice" that has been implemented in your setting.

The inaugural article for this column is a perfect example of successful integration of research findings into practice. This article explains how a heart failure clinic developed an outpatient nesiritide infusion program, based on findings from recent research studies. Pertinent literature is reviewed, detail is given on how the program was actually implemented, and a discussion and case study follow, which highlight multiple successful patient outcomes.

You do these types of projects regularly in your clinical setting- take time to closely evaluate your practice and you will come up with several great ideas to submit to this column to share with your colleagues!!!! This column is also a great forum for new writers to get started, especially if they have a mentor to work with them.

If you have an idea you want to discuss for this column, a manuscript you would like to submit, or are looking for a contact to help you better formulate you ideas, please contact the column editor, Sue Wingate, [email protected].
