I appreciated "Antidepressant Use in Children-Safe or Not?" (AJN Reports, August). Depression is a symptom of bipolar disorder. Early-onset bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed as depression, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or a personality disorder. Making sure that the child is well screened is essential; medication for depression or ADHD can exacerbate bipolar disorder symptoms.
