I cheered when I read Thomas Meyer's Viewpoint ("Calculating Drug Dosages-Accurately," November 2004) on setting the passing score at 90% or higher for his course on drug calculations. I congratulate him for putting patients first. Nearly 30 years ago, as a young critical care education instructor, I demanded a 100% passing score on my staff education drug-calculation test. I met with much opposition, but I stood firm. Finally, the head nurses could actually see benefits, as fewer medication errors were being made and patient care improved.
