Babies in strollers are exposed to air pollution. Because they are close to the ground, babies in strollers can be exposed to high levels of air pollution, a concern because of their developmental vulnerability during this stage of life. A recent study, published in the June Environment International, examined levels of air pollution at the breathing height for infants in strollers during usual school drop-off and pickup times (8 to 10 AM and 3 to 5 PM). Regardless of whether the strollers were front or back facing, infants were exposed to 44% more pollutants than parents pushing the stroller. The use of a double stroller with a top and bottom seat presented the worst outcomes; infants riding in the bottom seat were exposed to 72% more pollutants. The researchers recommend the use of stroller covers in areas of high pollution, such as traffic intersections and bus stops. They found the use of a cover reduced concentrations of small and large particles by 39% and 43%, respectively.
