Abstract

Parents in their 30s love and care for their 9-month-old son; a 29-year-old single father provides all the care for his 28-month-old daughter; a 17-year-old woman cares for a 30-month-old daughter with support from the grandmother. Sounds pretty routine, except all these children have something in common; they were all diagnosed with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), three have tracheostomies, and the other has a tracheostomy and a ventilator. All are being cared for at home by their parents with the support of home care nurses. This article provides comprehensive information on BPD and the role the home care nurse has with these families.
