As part of an ongoing, in-depth assessment and revision of our online RN-BSN program, we integrated palliative care competencies, which are delivered via the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium's Undergraduate Curriculum (https://elnec.academy.reliaslearning.com/about-elnec-undergraduate.aspx). This online, self-paced program consists of 6 modules, each addressing the nurse's specific roles in palliative care, as described in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Palliative CARES (Competencies And Recommendations for Educating undergraduate nursing Students) document. Learners complete 2 modules per semester for 3 semesters as part of their clinical courses and receive a certificate that they are encouraged to add to their e-portfolio and resume. Because of the sensitivity of the content, learners are given an opportunity to debrief in an online discussion following each module. Introductory content is presented during online orientation with essential information and resources housed in the virtual learning hub for easy access throughout the program. Learners have the entire semester to complete the self-paced modules, which provides flexibility for their busy schedules. By assisting learners to meet these competencies, we are preparing graduates to address the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of individuals and their families facing life-threatening illnesses and at end of life. The learners have voiced their appreciation of this content as added value to their professional development and career goals.
