More than half of isolation gowns don't meet protective standards. According to a high-priority hazard report from ECRI on the safety of using isolation gowns from nontraditional manufacturers, testing of 34 models of gowns from suppliers outside the United States and nontraditional suppliers within the United States found that half failed to meet the lowest level of protection standards of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), the leading global standard-setting organization for health technology. This included both gowns that claimed an AAMI level of protection and those without a known level of protection. ECRI recommends using gowns from outside the United States or nontraditional sources only as a last resort and, when doing so, contacting the company for detailed information about their testing protocols as well as copies of their testing reports. A copy of the ECRI report may be obtained from their website at http://www.ecri.org/imported-isolation-gowns-avoiding-safety-issues.
