Since my article was published as a part of "Nurse? Two Views" (May 2004), I've had many conversations with other nurses about the inappropriate use of the title "nurse." Besides promoting the common misconception that anyone dressed in scrubs is a nurse, the media frequently misuse the designation of nurse. Let's do our part by always introducing ourselves to patients as RNs or LPNs. And let's make our voices heard by sending e-mails and letters to sloppy journalists who incorrectly assign the title of nurse to anyone who happens to work in health care.
