This month's cover features a photo of In America: Remember, a September 2021 art installation that memorialized the U.S. victims of COVID-19. Artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, along with a team of volunteers, placed nearly 700,000 white flags on the National Mall in Washington, DC-one for each death. In a Washington Post op-ed, she explained that the project was "an effort to reclaim the dignity of 700,000 people who have become reduced to a single number, a number too large to fathom." Firstenberg invited the public to handwrite dedications to lost loved ones on the flags; those unable to visit in person could submit messages online to be transcribed onto flags by volunteers. A gallery of the dedications is available at http://www.inamericaflags.org.
