SECTION II

a. human insulin isophane suspension, 70%; human insulin injection, 30%

 

Used to control blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus, this insulin mixture contains intermediate-acting (isophane) and more rapid-acting (regular) insulin. Synthesized by recombinant DNA engineering, both types are identical to insulin produced by the human pancreas. Tell your patient to gently roll the vial in the palms of his hands to mix the insulin before administering it.

 

b. hydrocortisone, 1%; acetic acid, 2%

 

A patient with an infection of the external ear canal may be advised to use these eardrops containing hydrocortisone, a corticosteroid, and acetic acid, an anti-infective. Advise him to keep using them for at least 2 days after itching and other symptoms subside and to avoid getting water in his ear.

 

c. hydrocodone bitartrate, 5 mg; ibuprofen, 200 mg

 

This combination contains hydrocodone bitartrate, an opioid analgesic, and ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, to help relieve short-term acute pain. Tell your patient to take this medication with food to avoid stomach upset.

 

d. each 5 ml contains: chlorpheniramine tannate, 4.5 mg; phenylephrine tannate, 5 mg

 

A child may receive this combination to treat cold symptoms. Chlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine; phenylephrine, a decongestant. Inform the parents that the medication may cause drowsiness.

 

e. loperamide HCl, 2 mg; simethicone, 125 mg

 

Available over the counter, this combination contains the antidiarrheal loperamide and the antiflatulent simethicone. Instruct your adult patient to chew or swallow two tablets after the first loose stool, followed by water, then one tablet after each subsequent loose stool, up to four tablets in 24 hours.
