My thanks to Karen Roush for the poignant story of "Steven" (Reflections, March). I once cared for a dying patient who asked to be put out of his misery. Although I support the right to take one's own life, I can't be an accomplice. Such a request can present a difficult challenge to any health care professional. As nurses, we are advocates for our patients, including comfort and pain relief at the end of life, but we should not take actions that result in death. Articles like "Steven" help to clarify this issue for thoughtful discussion.
