I can't tell you how many times I've heard fellow nurses comment on how "nurses eat their young," then look the other way as a fellow nurse is unjustly castigated by another coworker or supervisor. I've been saddened by the unnecessary loss of good, talented, caring people who've resorted to leaving the profession. Physicians, nurses, and administrators all need to think about what we do and say and how it affects others.
Please reach out and be a mentor. Be a friend. Be a leader. Be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. What we do is all about people, not just a paycheck. I've enjoyed my 18-plus years of nursing, and I can't think of anything I'd rather do. Let's make it that way for everyone in our profession.
