Williams twice attended nursing school but was unable to complete her training because of health problems. She says, "In making this painting I used visual narrative to explore the feelings I had about having to put something on hold. Symbols can be personal or universal, and in this painting some are both: the body as it folds from life to death, branching roots, flowing water. If you look closely you'll see there's even a capped nurse waiting in the wings." Contact author: 49 Central Avenue, Ravena, NY 12143;
