A video-recording approach to traditional small group discussion (SGD) was incorporated into an online, graduate-level organizational management course to replace traditional discussion board assignments. Students were expected to (1) analyze weekly instructional content in lectures, readings, videos, and assignments and apply it to real-world, high-reliability health care organizations, and (2) evaluate course content based on their own experiences. Following a 2-week course content module, students were placed in groups, given discussion prompts (eg, describe something you have experienced in the real world or something you have limited knowledge about and how you would like to gain additional experience), and required to record their SGDs in a Zoom discussion lasting 20 to 45 minutes. Students decided on a time to meet and took turns as discussion lead, and one student uploaded the recording to the course learning management system for grading. During the grading process, the instructor simultaneously viewed the recording and typed feedback comments in response to the group discussion to clarify and supplement the course content. Student feedback on the assignment indicated satisfaction with the Recorded Content Discussions assignment, citing usefulness in helping apply course content to real-world organizational management problems and their preference for recorded SGDs over traditional post/respond-to-post discussion board assignments.
