Each year, the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI) and the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recognize a nursing informatics leader who demonstrates significant leadership contributions to health engagements and care outcomes through technology. This award recognizes a nursing informatics leader and changemaker from a provider, industry, academic organization, or professional society. Changemakers are recognized as inspirational and innovative leaders dedicated to pursuing healthcare improvement through the power of technology.1

 

We are pleased to recognize the 2023 HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Changemaker Award winner, Anna E. Schoenbaum, DNP, MS, RN-BC, FHIMSS. As Vice President of Applications and Digital Health at Penn Medicine, Dr Schoenbaum is a respected leader in nursing informatics. Dr Schoenbaum has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare and 20 years of informatics and health technology. Her career started in the pediatric intensive care setting, where she moved into a management role. She has held many roles leading digital transformation efforts, including clinical applications, health information exchange, population health, patient experience, operations engineering, and performance improvement. Dr Schoenbaum is recognized for bringing health information technology together with clinical practice and creating practice and policy standards at both the local and national levels. Her diligent work in precision medicine and contributions to opening the Pavilion of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania are two key examples demonstrating her inspirational and innovative leadership.2

 

Schoenbaum earned a doctorate in nursing practice and a master of science in informatics at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She received her BSN from the Medical College of Georgia and is board-certified in informatics by the American Nurse Credentialing Center. In addition, Dr Schoenbaum is a fellow of HIMSS.3

 

Dr Schoenbaum is an active member and contributor to the nursing informatics community. She is a member of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Committee, HIMSS Innovation Committee, HIMSS Social Determinants of Health Task Force, the Maryland HIMSS Board of Directors, and the American Nurses Association Precision Health Competencies Workgroup. In addition, Dr Schoenbaum serves on the University of Maryland School of Nursing faculty, teaching informatics to nurse practitioners, graduate students in health administration, and nursing informatics programs. She is also a visiting professor at Chamberlain University.3

 

Receiving the HIMSS Changemaker award fills me with pride and honor, as my peers recognize me as a respected thought leader in advancing healthcare and policy. Collaborating with distinguished informatics colleagues from around the world has been invaluable to me. I am appreciative of the support and collaboration of friends who have a shared objective of enhancing global health. This recognition fuels my journey as a healthcare innovator and changemaker, who is eager to bring about positive change in patients' lives. I inspire others to join me. I am grateful for the opportunity and feel privileged to be in the company of esteemed individuals.

 

Dr Schoenbaum was selected for this award by the HIMSS Board of Directors and the Governing Directors of the ANI, supported by nominations from nursing informatics peers. We applaud Dr Schoenbaum for this international recognition and are grateful for her contributions to advancing health through technology as a nursing informatics changemaker! Dr Schoenbaum will receive a symbol of recognition and will be recognized by HIMSS and ANI throughout the year.
