Legal Basics for Professional Nursing Practice is an excellent and must-have pamphlet about legal issues relevant to all nurses. The monograph was edited by LaTonia Denise Wright, RN, JD, and is the result of a collaborative effort between The Center for American Nurses and The American Association of Nurse Attorneys. This easy-to-read document describes the basics with regard to the legal regulation of nursing practice. Sample chapters include boards of nursing and professional nursing licensure, the employer-employee relationship, collective bargaining, workplace rights and responsibilities, and medical malpractice and nursing negligence. Current issues in nursing, such as whistle blowing, mandatory overtime, and scope of practice are discussed, as well as how to proceed and act if called to be a defendant in a criminal case. The section that lists the most common negligence complaints against nurses is particularly interesting and vital to all nurses. Every nurse should have this pamphlet in her/his library.
