The United States Health Workforce Profile was published October 2006 by the New York Center for Health Workforce Studies, Rensselaer, NY. It contains the latest comprehensive national data on this topic and RNs were among the health care professionals studied. To facilitate reporting, the report says the Midwest region is composed of two census divisions: East North Central, which includes Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio; and West North Central, which includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri.

One of the key findings from the Workforce Profile was that East North Central has the fewest NPs per capita in the country. (New England, with the most NPs per capita, has more than three times as many.)
