LifeScan and the FDA announced that counterfeit blood glucose test strips are being sold in the United States for use with various models of the OneTouch blood glucose meters. The strips were distributed nationwide but primarily in Ohio, New York, Florida, Maryland, and Missouri.

The counterfeit test strips can potentially return incorrect blood glucose readings, which can result in patients taking too much or too little insulin, leading to serious injury or death. The fakes are as follows:

* OneTouch Basic/Profile (lots 2662169, 272894A, 2619932, 2606340, 227078A, and 2615211) test strips

* OneTouch Ultra (lots 2691191 and 2691261) test strips.

Consumers who have counterfeit test strips are advised to stop using them and to replace them immediately and contact their healthcare provider. If the outer box has been discarded or the lot numbers aren't known, the test strips should be discarded and replaced.

Patients can be advised to contact the source where the strips were supplied for restitution.
