Halogen phototherapy units are popular for treatment of hyperbilirubinemia in the NICU because they are compact and caregiver friendly. Quartz halogen bulbs, however, can generate considerable amounts of heat, sometimes overwarming the infant's environment. A new type of phototherapy unit (Giraffe SPOT PT Lite, GE Healthcare) uses a metal halide bulb. This phototherapy unit represents a significant improvement over traditional spotlight phototherapy because the light source is located in a light box, away from the baby, resulting in a cooler light surrounding the infant. High-intensity light is transmitted through a light pipe in a flexible gooseneck that can be adjusted for maximum coverage over the body surface.
