National Alliance of Wound Care
The National Alliance of Wound Care (NAWC) has announced the recipients of its annual achievement awards and WCC Scholarship for 2007. Awards were presented at the recently held Wild on Wounds Conference in Baltimore, MD. All nominations were reviewed by the Board of Directors awards committee, based on the criteria announced earlier this year. The 3 awards were: Outstanding WCC of the Year, Outstanding Research in Wound Care, and Outstanding Community Outreach for the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes-Related Wounds.
Both the "Outstanding WCC of the Year" and "Outstanding Research in Wound Care" awards went to LuAnn Reed, MSN, CRRN, RNC, WCC, of The Drake Center in Cincinnati, OH. Ms Reed launched her nursing career in 1986 and developed a passion for wound care. She received her WCC in 2004 and became the Wound Care Program Manager at The Drake Center in 2005. She revamped and revised all wound care policies and updated protocols. "The NAWC is proud to have selected LuAnn for both these awards. She sets the standard for WCCs everywhere and is an inspiration to us all," said Debbie Hecker, RN, MBA, WCC, Executive Director, NAWC.
The Award for "Outstanding Community Outreach for the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes-Related Wounds" was awarded to Michelle Goncalves, LPN, WCC, of Kindred Hospital Northeast Stoughton in Stoughton, MA. According to sources at Kindred, Ms Goncalves provides patient care/family education and documents her interventions with response and outcome for others to follow. Ms Goncalves has been involved in promoting good skin care management for the diabetic patient and helps develop relationships with community-based hospital and nursing facilities to assimilate a seamless transition of care for patients and their families.
The NAWC awarded the WCC scholarship to Janet Jones, RN, from the Duke Raleigh Wound Healing Center in Raleigh, NC. The scholarship provides free tuition to the WCEI Course in Skin and Wound Management and the NAWC Certification Examination. Ms Jones brings 18 years of wound care expertise to Wound Healing Center and has been a Clinical Case Manager for 2 physicians in the multidisciplinary wound care provided to patients at the center. She blends 3 critical elements: broad clinical and procedural knowledge, outstanding people skills and a sophisticated appreciation for the flexibility and innovation required in today's world. "After close review of all nominations, we are proud to award this scholarship to such a deserving individual. We look forward to adding Janet Jones, RN, to our ever-growing roster of WCCs," Ms Hecker said.

American Professional Wound Care Association
The American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA) has announced that "The Role of Free Radicals in Wound Healing: Cell Cycle and Quiescent Cells" will be the topic of the Scientific Address at APWCA2008 in Fort Worth, TX. Illustrious researchers in wound care Drs Darlene McCord, Prabhat Goswami, and Ehab Sarsour will deliver this presentation on March 6, 2008, at the Marriott Renaissance Worthington Hotel. The APWCA's course will be held March 6-9, 2008.
Nurses, podiatrists, and physicians may attain up to 30 CEs/CMEs at the program, with credit applied for and pending at press time. From "A Superoxidized Solution to Wound Healing - Is there Evidence that Shows Promise" by David Allie, MD, FAPWCA, to "Diabetic Foot Ulcers" by Andrew Boulton, MD, APWCA2008 will explore all aspects of wound care, including plastic surgery with a hands-on wet lab; beds, mattresses, and surfaces: intervention that makes a difference; the latest techniques on negative pressure; a complete assessment on etiology of the swollen limb; the business of wound care practices and centers; oral abstracts; poster abstracts; and much more. APWCA2008 will assemble the most prominent physicians, researchers, and experts worldwide in the field at this premier scientific event. Attendees will also have the opportunity to watch Dr Boulton receive the distinguished APWCA Outstanding Achievement Award, as well as participate in other social activities.
