This pen has a memory

Eli Lilly launches its prescription HumaPen Memoir/Luxura HD insulin pen with digital memory capability for use with the company's insulin lispro injection (rDNA origin) 3-mL cartridges (Humalog). The device is intended to simplify daily management of diabetes for people who take several injections of mealtime insulin each day. It features a consumer-friendly "push to know" digital display that lets patients record and review the last 16 insulin doses, including the priming doses.

A smaller version of the pen (HumaPen Luxura HD) is also expected to be available by prescription. The reusable device, which can deliver 1 to 30 units of insulin lispro in half-unit increments, can be useful to children and other patients who don't use large amounts of insulin.

A recent report has raised concerns about the risk of heart attack associated with rosiglitazone maleate (Avandia). But interim data from a prospective clinical trial (Rosiglitazone Evaluated for Cardiac Outcomes and Regulation of Glycemia in Diabetes, or RECORD), which was designed to evaluate cardiovascular outcomes in more than 4,000 patients with type 2 diabetes, show no significant difference between the Avandia group and control groups in incidence rate of heart attack and death due to cardiovascular events. Patients taking Avandia did have a higher incidence rate of congestive heart failure than patients in the control groups; however, no difference was seen between the Avandia group and the control group in the key outcome of cardiovascular hospitalizations and death. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will continue to weigh data from several sources and recommends that patients taking Avandia who are at high risk for heart attack should talk to their health care providers about all available treatment options for type 2 diabetes.
