It was inspiring to read about poverty concerns, nationally and globally, in the November issue. I retired from nursing one year ago, and I do not miss the lack of social awareness I found among my peers. Many nurses I worked with were materialistic, but I was one of the few who subscribed to nursing journals and was eager to learn new things. Nursing requires more than compassion. It's a vocation involving science, education, and sensitivity to human need. AJN has supported all of these qualities. Keep up the good work.
