Abstract
Healthcare mirrors the society in which it is practiced. Therefore, an examination of demographic, social, and economic trends in the United States provides valuable insight into the healthcare systems evolving to support a changing nation. This article examines the implications for healthcare of several key societal trends and suggests how information technology can help the chief nurse executive drive nursing's evolution to the health system of the future.
