Abstract

Women's participation in athletics has dramatically increased since 1972, when Title IX, the educational amendments to the Civil Rights Act, was signed into law. Sports participation has many positive physiological and psychological benefits for women. However, women have special nutritional needs that differ from those of male athletes. This review discusses nutritional strategies to maintain optimal bone health and iron status and to avoid eating disorders while participating in athletics.
