Smith & Nephew's Advanced Wound Management Division, St Petersburg, Florida, has launched its new RENASYS EZ Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) system, designed to address the needs of wound care professionals and patients and allow clinicians to exercise their own best clinical judgment in NPWT with confidence. Features and functions of the RENASYS EZ include a control that varies pressure from 40 to 200 mm Hg and the ability to use both foam and gauze dressings, according to the manufacturer. The device also offers quick-click connectors than can help reduce the risk of error, multiple safety alarms, battery life of up to 40 hours and battery recharge in 3 hours, and an intravenous pole and bed mounts to reduce the system's footprint at the patient's bedside.

The Food and Drug Administration has expanded the indication for AQUACEL and AQUACEL Ag Dressings with Hydrofibe Technology from ConvaTec, Skillman, New Jersey, for the management of surgical wounds that heal by primary intent (wound edges heal directly touching each other), including dermatologic, orthopedic, and vascular incisions. In addition, the initial indication for use in surgical wounds left to heal by secondary intent (wound edges cannot be held together and scar tissue forms) was clarified to specifically encompass dehisced surgical incisions. AQUACEL Ag Dressing also received an expanded indication for the management of infected wounds.

The seating system has a compact pump with user-friendly controls that offers up to 18 hours of battery run time. The active therapy behind the AURA Freedom is provided by 6 fully alternating cells appropriately placed in the ischial region that operate on a 1-in-2 alternating cycle for optimum pressure redistribution. The alternating cells that provide the active therapy are embedded in a foam base for maximum stability, according to the manufacturer. The seating system is designed to accommodate individuals up to 265 lb.

Medline Industries, Inc, Mundelein, Illinois, offers a new educational CD to instruct physicians on assessing and documenting pressure ulcers. The MD Education CD is a newly created module of Medline's comprehensive Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program, originally designed for nurses and certified nursing assistants. The CD is interactive and is a highly graphic tool encompassing 4 components: the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 and its financial implications on the hospital, assessing skin conditions that are present on admission, recognizing wound types and stages of pressure ulcers, and how to document pressure ulcers present on admission.

3M, St. Paul, Minnesota, has launched Tegaderm IV Dressing for the BD Nexiva Catheter System. Specifically designed for BD's catheter system, the dressing offers a new alternative to address catheter movement, dislodgments, and fallouts. The dressing features a J-shaped slit that fits snugly around the built-in extension tubing, helping to secure both the tubing and the catheter. The dressing is constructed of the same materials as other Tegaderm products and has a thin, highly breathable polyurethane film backing coated with latex-free, moist skin adhesive, making it comfortable, conformable, and able to stick well to skin.
