This presentation will review the scientific research into the residual soils found in clinically used flexible endoscopes before and after reprocessing, and highlight what this research indicates about effective methods and measures for proper reprocessing. Findings employing user-based methods for testing endoscope cleanliness after reprocessing will be reviewed and suggestions for effective end-user surveillance of presumptively cleaned endoscopes will be discussed. This presentation will highlight some of the key soils that can hinder this process if the cleaning is not done effectively; and will review quality improvement methods which end-users have employed to monitor the efficacy of their reprocessing regimen.
