American Professional Wound Care Association

Review course. The American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA) is offering "The Essentials-A Comprehensive Review and Refresher Course on Wound Care Management and Intervention," September 12-13, 2009, at the Renaissance Philadelphia Airport Hotel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and again on January 16-17, 2010, at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel LAX, near the Los Angeles Airport, Los Angeles, California. The 15-hour course is scheduled over weekend days to avoid conflicting with regular practice hours. Seven faculty members, all leaders in wound care and noted for their teaching and communication skills, help make this program a valuable tool for certification examination preparation, including the Physician Wound Care Certification Examination offered by the Council for Medical Education and Testing (CMET). The lectures will feature multiple subjects that serve as a broad-based review on the standard treatments for diabetic, ischemic, venous, and pressure ulcers. This includes management of the wounds and diseases that directly impact on healing. For additional information and registration, visit http://www.apwca.org or call 215-364-4100.

Certification examination. The Physician-Specific Wound Care Certification Examination, credentialing all prescribing physicians (MD, DO, and DPM) in the field of wound care, is offered by the CMET. The certification process is the examination endorsed by the APWCA and recognized by the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine. It is intended to be the first stepping stone to obtain specialty recognition in wound care.

The next examination will be offered on Sunday, October 25, 2009, in conjunction with the Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care in San Antonio, Texas. The examination will also be offered on November 19, 2009, in conjunction with the VEITHsymposium in New York. Plans for 2010 include offering the examination in Los Angeles (the winter date will be announced soon) and on April 11, 2010, in conjunction with APWCA2010 in Philadelphia. Resources for study can be found on the CMET Web site.
