In 1967 and 1968, I was a young nurse at Walter Reed General Hospital, where I was honored to work with the Vietnam veterans who had undergone amputations. They were full of hope, still had a strong zest for life, and were exceedingly concerned about each other's well-being. Even while suffering or struggling with their losses, these young men had wheelchair races in the back hallways. They'd always make sure we knew when one of them was having a particularly difficult adjustment.

Although I served stateside, it took me a month to even look at the picture of the lovely Vietnam Women's Memorial in AJN without crying.
