Abstract

This article reviews the botany, mythology, phytochemistry, and biological properties of pomegranate fruits. Unique properties due to the presence of certain ellagitannins found only in the pomegranate led to the demonstration of its potent antioxidant and immune modulatory properties. The increased popularity of pomegranate because of its perceived health benefits for a variety of common age-related diseases including prostate cancer is reviewed.
