Dear Colleague,

While reading about nursing leadership for this issue of our eNewsletter, I learned so much about the issues that nursing leaders are facing today in this climate of health care change and the push for Magnet designation. I also was impressed to read about studies and programs specific to nursing leaders.

A favorite quote from my reading is from  Nurse Executive Practice: Creating a New Vision for Leadership in the September/October issue of Nursing Administration Quarterly:

"…the competency of nurse executive's roles and the leadership that they provide in a complex array of transformational activities is central to the profession's ability to fulfill its obligation to coordinate, integrate, and facilitate the relationships and activities necessary to sustainably transform health care in a 21st-century context."

In this article, the authors share information about the NORTH STAR SUMMIT: State of the Science on Nurse Executive Practice: Creating the Vision for the Future which took place this past June at the University of Pennsylvania. Topical issues addressed included 3 leadership practice domains: (1) professional and personal organizational leadership, (2) high reliability in nursing practice, and (3) transitions in care accountabilities.
