March 5, 2012

Dear Colleague,

March is National Nutrition Month, a campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which "focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits." One of my favorite articles on nutrition was published in the November 2011 issue of Nursing2011 - Empowering Nurses to Improve Patient Nutrition. In this article, the author shares the story of how nursing staff worked together to solve the problem of inadequate availability of bulk nourishment items to help manage nausea and hypoglycemia of the patients on the unit. After gathering evidence, interviewing staff, and meeting with nursing leadership and food and nutrition services leadership, the nursing team enacted a successful plan which has helped maintain optimal nutritional status of the patients. Take some time this month to think about how you can promote healthy nutrition and educate your patients and the public.
