The Center for Clinical Investigation (CCI) of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses (WOCN) Society provides funding for research grants for Society members annually. The grants are funded through the generosity of WOCN Society's corporate partners and the WOCN Society. The CCI expands the existing research base for WOC nursing practice and facilitates WOC nurses to develop their roles as clinical investigators through funded research projects.

The CCI is pleased to announce the Call for Research Proposals for 2012 grants. If you are a member of the WOCN Society, you are eligible to apply for one of the following 6 grants. International members are encouraged to apply.

NEW-Notice of Interest! Please submit a Notice of Interest e-mail anytime and before the grant submission deadline to Linda Dahle, Program Associate ([email protected]) when you are considering applying for a 2012 research grant. The 6 grants available are:

1. Bard, Inc.-WOCN CCI Research Grant for Fecal Incontinence$8000Funding Priorities:

1. Supporting WOCN nurses in collaboration with other nursing specialties (eg, floor, critical care, and infection control).

2. Describe the critical etiology and outcomes of nonchronic fecal incontinence in the acute care and critical care setting:

a. Identify main causes of fecal incontinence in the acute and critical care setting.

b. Identify primary treatment options used to manage fecal incontinence in the acute and critical care setting and key patient outcomes associated with those options.

c. Assess the impact of fecal incontinence and/or its management on skin condition, infection, length of stay, and complications.

3. Assess the economic impact of various approaches in clinical practice to manage fecal incontinence, including the use of stool management systems on:

a. Nursing time and efficiency, and use of supplies

b. Prevention of complications

c. Other patient-related outcomes

2. Hollister, Inc.-WOCN CCI Research Grant on Positive Outcomes for the Ostomate$10,000Funding Priorities:

1. Describe the role of convexity in ensuring a secure pouch seal, extending pouch wear time, and skin health.

2. Compare/contrast management of complications (stomal or peristomal skin) and patient outcomes provided by a WOC nurse vs a generic home health registered nurse.

3. Describe education and resources needed by ostomates during the transition period from acute care to home.

4. Test an education intervention to minimize complications for the ostomate during the transition period from acute care to home.

3. Regenesis Biomedical-WOCN CCI Research Grant for Unsatisfactorily Healing Wounds$7500Funding Priorities:

1. Describe cost/time to healing, closure/quality of life, etc, of healing wounds in home-care using conservative treatment.

2. Describe cost/time to healing closure/quality of life, etc, in a hospital/by surgery or a wound clinic or even using telemedicine.

3. Describe the experience of patients with these wounds (lifestyle, self-image, activities, relationships, and satisfaction) in home care or hospital.

4. Sage, Inc.-WOCN CCI Research Grant for Heel Pressure$7500Funding Priorities: Studies of hospital patients are preferred.

* Determine the average compliance to a q2h turning protocol in critical care settings.

* Describe the specific barriers to repositioning and q2h compliance.

* Describe the specific surgical procedures that result in the highest incidence of pressure-related injury in the operating room and assess how repositioning in these procedures be facilitated.

* Determine the incidence of hospital-acquired heel and sacral ulcers in acute care facilities.

* Determine the cost of treating both hospital-acquired heel pressure and sacral pressure ulcers.

* Determine the average LOS increase with hospital-acquired heel and sacral pressure ulcers.

* Determine the cost savings of heel pressure ulcer prevention.

* Compare the effectiveness of products, devices, or practices to prevent or treat heel pressure ulcers.

* Test interventions to increase patients' compliance with heel protection.

* Develop and/or test models that predict economic impact of heel pressure ulcers while adjusting for various risk factors of hospital patients.

5. Sage, Inc.-WOCN CCI Research Grant for Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis$7500Funding Priorities: Studies of hospital patients are preferred.

* Assess Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD) that can include but is not limited to:

Differentiating between IAD and stage 1 and 2 pressure ulcers

Standardizing assessment of IAD

Improving objective measures of IAD using instrumentation

* Determine the risk or effect of IAD on pressure ulcer development or severity

* Assess the economic impact of IAD or pressure ulcers that can include but is not limited to:

Cost savings of prevention in hospital patients

Costs of treatment and effects of IAD on length of hospital stay

Development of models that predict economic impact of IAD while adjusting for various risk factors of hospital patients

* Test interventions to prevent or treat IAD

* Assess the effective use of the WOC nurse in preventing or reducing IAD or pressure ulcers

6. WOCN Society Member's Research Grant$7500Funding Priorities:

* Any topic of WOC nursing practice or that promotes WOC nursing specialty practice.
