SPAN-America Medical Systems, Inc. recently chose Unimark Plastics to produce its Secure IV Catheter. This product is intended to protect healthcare workers from needlestick injuries with a protective shield and audible and tactile indicators. Unimark also has patented a "bleed-back" guard called the Automatic Vein Occlusion valve, which the company believes will prevent bloodborne pathogen exposure. BD Autoguard Pro Shielded IV Catheter
BD has launched another product in its family of Autoguard IV catheters. The Autoguard Pro Shielded IV Catheter offers a passive retraction feature designed to protect healthcare workers from needlesticks. The catheter is fitted with a spring-based technology that retracts the needle passively into a shielded housing as the clinician withdraws it from the catheter. The passive retraction technology was developed and licensed to BD by the Ventura, California-based Med-Design Corporation.
