"Managing Pain During an Opioid Epidemic" (Nursing Resources, December 2019) provides a wonderful list of resources related to opioids and pain management.

When educating people on these topics, it is also vital to discuss overdose prevention programs. It's important that as nurses we are educated on naloxone and its use, and that we share this information with patients and their families. Naloxone can save lives by temporarily reversing the effects of opioids when given during an overdose. Many public health programs and community-based programs provide education on responding to an opioid overdose and also distribute naloxone to be administered by bystanders.
