Nurses who offer good advice about smoking cessation greatly increase the likelihood that a smoker will quit, according to reports published in a special supplement to Nursing Research. One study found that people who received cessation information from a nurse were about 50% more likely to quit smoking than those who hadn't received information from a nurse.
To decrease tobacco dependence, researchers recommend educating nurses to deliver interventions to patients. The supplement contains tobacco cessation information, including an evaluation of cessation methods.
