Nurses Week 2025: Reigniting the Passion and Power Within Nurses
It’s been five years since the COVID-19 pandemic shocked and shut down the world. At its height, nurses and other healthcare providers were hailed as heroes for risking their own lives to care for patients battling the deadly respiratory virus. Since that time, that hero status has somewhat faded, and once again, most, if not all, clinicians are mired in feelings of burnout, stress, and powerlessness. A survey of over 54,000 nurses conducted by Martin et al. (2023) confirmed these sentiments and described a decline in the registered nurse (RN) workforce by 2.7% between 2021 and 2022. During handoff to the client’s intake nurse, Carol, I mentioned a few of the clinical and logistical problems that were impeding the client’s recovery. Carol immediately identified community resources and inexpensive homeopathic remedies that aligned with our client’s resources and desire to think outside the box. I was impressed! Keep Reading...
The Power of Nurses: Returning to the Bedside
By Elizabeth Wirth-Tomaszewski, DNP, RN, CRNP, CCRN, CNE, ACNP-BC, ACNPC
Thirty-two years. Really? I’ve been a nurse for 32 years, and a critical care nurse practitioner for 16 of those years. I was always a night owl and loved my 12-hour nights. And then in 2013, I was asked to come back to teach for the NP program I had graduated from. A year later, I was the track director, and bedside clinical practice took a back seat. I had a great run of being an educator and moved on to another non-clinical job in publishing. You know that “5 days a week, 8-hour shift” gig. Although I worked from home, I just wasn’t feeling it. I didn’t feel like I was making a difference anymore. So, I decided to go back to the bedside full time. Keep Reading...
