A preceptor and a mentor are two distinct roles that I define as this. The preceptor is assigned to the new employee, provides orientation to the specific unit and facility. The mentor is someone chosen by the new employee.
The characteristics of a mentor that I believe are most important are:
A coach, a good listener, non-judgmental, teacher, approachable, and last but not least-patient.
A mentor is all these things and so much more. The new employee needs to feel comfortable asking questions in a non-threatening environment. A mentor allows for these sessions and builds upon them to help the new nurse develop his or her own style of nursing. Helping another nurse to flourish in the profession of nursing is a feeling that is second to none.
