Dear Colleague,

Acute coronary syndrome, or ACS, describes any condition characterized by signs and symptoms of sudden myocardial ischemia. It is the umbrella term for unstable angina, non-ST-segment elevation MI (NSTEMI), and ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI). These three conditions differ with regard to duration, severity, and treatments. Here are some of the key differences:

  • Unstable angina and NSTEMI normally result from a partially or intermittently occluded coronary artery, whereas STEMI results from a fully occluded coronary artery.
  • Signs and symptoms are generally longer in duration and more severe with NSTEMI than unstable angina.
  • Cardiac biomarkers are elevated with STEMI and NSTEMI, but not with unstable angina.
