| Dear
Colleague,
Acute
coronary syndrome, or ACS, describes any condition characterized
by signs and symptoms of sudden myocardial ischemia. It is
the umbrella term for unstable angina, non-ST-segment elevation
MI (NSTEMI), and ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI). These three
conditions differ with regard to duration, severity, and treatments.
Here are some of the key differences:
- Unstable angina and
NSTEMI normally result from a partially or intermittently
occluded coronary artery, whereas STEMI results from a fully
occluded coronary artery.
- Signs and symptoms
are generally longer in duration and more severe with NSTEMI
than unstable angina.
- Cardiac biomarkers
are elevated with STEMI and NSTEMI, but not with unstable
angina.

differ, risks for women, and the role of interferons by exploring
the articles in More Resources. Also, access a handy patient
education tool!
