Abstract

Vitamin D recommendations for infants, children, and adolescents have recently changed. Infants through adolescents in the United States are at an increased risk for deficiency and/or insufficiency. As research develops, the importance of vitamin D's involvement in several areas of life has been emphasized. The changes in recommendations and the rationale behind them are explored. While vitamin D does come from limited dietary sources, it is a complicated nutrient because humans primarily obtain it through ultraviolet radiation to the skin. Implementation and barriers of the most recent recommendations have been reviewed.
