As a hospice nurse, I've seen many people who are afraid to take opioids-even doctors don't want their patients to take them ("Ethical Practice with Patients in Pain," Ethical Issues, January). I understand the epidemic we are facing, but patients who truly need [these medications] are either afraid or not prescribed them, and that needs to stop. Education is key, but it needs to come from more than just the hospice RN. Don't make everyone so fearful that those who need it either won't or can't get it.
