Abstract

Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is an important tool for evaluating the severity of bone loss and making treatment decisions before fractures occur. There are many options to prevent bone loss and reduce fracture risk, however, individuals at risk for osteoporosis are not routinely screened to determine actual risk. This article discusses osteoporosis, criteria for testing, bone mineral testing, treatment goals, and practice implications.
