I was really happy to see the article "Improving Bruise Detection in Patients with Dark Skin Tone" (Nurse Innovators, July) in AJN. About 10 or so years ago, Marilyn Sommers and her team at the University of Cincinnati, of which I was a part, did work in this area on skin color and bruising in dark skin as it was related to sexual assault. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. I'm glad to see this work continue to be addressed and in the nursing journals. Congratulations to AJN for highlighting this issue and for the guest editorial by Angelina Jolie ("Addressing Health Inequities in Survivors of Domestic Violence"), which will bring much attention to the issue. We still have much work to do in this area in our continued quest for health equity.
