Review Video

While dementia diminishes the expressive and receptive abilities of individuals, communication takes place long after our ability to use and understand words. Fortunately, many techniques and strategies are available to better assess the communication skills of individuals and to enhance communication using alternative strategies. These best practices are combined in a tool from the Try This series called Communication Difficulties: Assessment and Interventions in Hospitalized Older Adults with Dementia.

This video discusses and demonstrates best practices in assessing and improving communication and understanding when caring for older adults with dementia, or other medical problems affecting expressive and receptive abilities, and outlines a range of options nurses and others can use to improve understanding and promote patient safety. This video organizes information in chaptered formats for viewers interested in specific aspects of the program.
