How to Try This Video: Preventing Aspiration in Older Adults with Dysphagia

Review Video

Difficulty swallowing, or Dysphagia, can occur as a consequence of aging -- especially when neurological impairment or dementia is present. Proximity of the esophagus and the trachea bring with it the risk of aspirating food or liquids where Dysphagia exists, and developing aspiration pneumonia– even when feeding tubes are in place.

This video discusses best practices in preventing aspiration during and within the first few hours after oral feedings, as well as discussion of best practices and demonstration of techniques that help the nurse assess placement and evaluate the location of feeding tubes. Also included in the program are practices considered outdated and unreliable in assessing feeding tube placement. This video organizes information in chaptered formats for viewers interested in specific aspects of the program.
