Clinical Update: Skin Disease in HIV

Most patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) will develop skin manifestations of the disease. Sometimes skin disease in HIV is the first sign of HIV infection. Also, skin disease in HIV can give clues to the stage of the patient’s HIV infection. Below are common skin diseases associated with HIV:
  • Infections
    • candidiasis
    • herpes zoster
    • molloscum contagiosum
    • other fungal, bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections
  • Inflammatory disorders
    • seborrheic dermatitis
    • psoriasis
    • Reiter syndrome
    • cutaneous drug eruptions
    • folliculitis
  • Neoplastic complications
    • Kaposi’s sarcoma
    • nonmelanoma skin cancer
