Clinical Update: Skin Cancer Prevention

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Awareness of skin cancer prevention is important because skin cancer is largely preventable. Education of our patients and the public about risk factors and ways to avoid this disease are critical. Risk factors for nonmelanoma skin cancers include large amounts of exposure to natural or artificial sunlight, a fair complexion, actinic keratosis, radiation treatment in the past, a weakened immune system, past treatment with radiation, and male gender. For malignant melanoma, risk factors include large amounts of exposure to natural or artificial sunlight, a fair complexion, a history of severe sunburns in youth, the presence of moles, family history of atypical nevi, being white and male.

Skin cancer prevention methods include the use of sunscreen, avoiding sun exposure for long periods of time, especially during the hours when the sun is strongest, and wearing long sleeves, pants, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors. Clinical trials related to skin cancer prevention are ongoing at the National Cancer Institute.
